Economy Corner Week 9

Welcome to the weekly Economy Corner where I suggest the Best Bang for the Buck options at each position (Price Paid/Points Earned). Most of us probably won’t crack the top 100 in the Global Overall league. In fact, I’d be happy to just hit the top 1,000. However, we all have the capability to achieve #1 in our private leagues against our friends, coworkers, and fellow club supporters. I am here to help you achieve that.

Value Play Examples from Week 8 (Week 8 price) –
Goalkeeper: Gonzalez $4.7 scored 8 pts compared to Robles $6.1 scored 7 pts
Defender: Delamea $6.0 scored 11 pts compared to Lima cost only $4.6 also scored 11 pts.
Midfielder: Alessandrini $9.6 scored 4 pts compred to Jeffrey cost only $5.3 scored 9 pts.
Forward: Morris $8.8 scored 8.7 pts compared to Wright-Phillips $10 scored 4 pts.

Recap of Week 8 Suggestions
Big Win: Clean sheets for both Goalkeeper Gonzalez DAL and Defender Burch MIN

Swing and a Miss: Suggesting Steffen and Crognale CLB against New York Red Bulls. Forwards didn’t do well either, both Ramirez MIN and Moncosu MTL were out shined by fellow teammates Ibarra MIN and Jackson-Hamel MTL.

The Push: Midfield did a good job, but nothing splashy. Medunjanin PHI earned his third assist of the season and scored 6 pts. Fagundez NE earned 7, but that’s disappointing in a DGW, he was also out scored by his cheaper teammate Caldwell. Vazquez TOR did have a great game in their 3-1 route earning 8 pts, tied for second highest points scored by a Toronto player for the week.

Biggest Regret: Not seeing the news about Adi before it was too late.

*Weekly disclaimer: I’m not saying these choices will perform better than high priced Robles, Besler, Valeri or Villa; these are simply value plays so that you can still squeeze Robles, Besler, Valeri and Villa all into you starting XI.

Week 9 Value Suggestions

Goalkeepers: I really like Melia SKC for this week. He’s the highest scoring goalkeeper and at home against RSL. Steffen CLB is back home, but I don’t like his match up against Villa and NYCFC. My two suggestions for the week are cheaper than Melia, and have much more favorable match ups than Steffen.

Bendik ORL $5.1 – Orlando is back home, again, for the fifth time in seven games, against Colorado Rapids. Orlando has two clean sheets for the season and only Columbus Crew has scored more than 1 goal against them. Through 6 games Colorado is averaging less than 1 goal a game.

Kann ATL $4.6 – Of the top 10 highest scoring goalkeepers for the season, Kann is the cheapest. Atlanta is finally back home after four games on the road. They’re welcoming a DC United team that has scored six goals in their last four games. However United have been held scoreless in four of their seven games.

Defenders: Medranda, Lima, Long and Zavaleta  are on everyone’s radar, they are all selected by at least 13% of fantasy teams. It’d be really easy to just pick three of them to list here as they’re all under $5.5 and have favorable matches this week. However I don’t want to insult you, so here are few differential options.

Phillips RSL $5.0 – The highest owned RSL player is Wingert at 6.7%, but it’s Phillips who is Salt Lake’s highest scoring defender (by 1 point). My concern is that RSL is on the road against Sporting KC.

Jones SEA $5.3 – Seattle has a favorable home game against New England. Yes I know Jones is owned by 12% of the league, but he’s the only consistently playing defender Seattle has; Jones has 180 more minutes than Marshall, and an additional 208 minutes more than Fisher.

Burch MIN $5.5 – Haters are gonna hate, but did you see anyone else suggesting Burch and the Loons for defense last week? Well I’m doubling down this week as Minnesota are hosting San Jose.

Midfielders: Of course Godoy is going in my line up, I don’t need to tell you that.

Medunjanin PHI $8 – 7,7,5,7,6,5,6, Medunjanin is the tenth highest scoring midfielder overall, second highest scoring midfielder under $9. Still selected by only 2.3% of teams.

Jones LA $8.0 – Galaxy had a dreadful home game last week against Seattle. This week they can rebound as they host Philadelphia. Jones has the second most fantasy points after Alessandrini on LA’s roster. Union has yet to figure out how to stop teams from scoring.

Vazquez TOR $8.8 –  Vazquez was doing great even before Giovinco’s season breakout debut this last week. If Gio really is back, that’s even better for Vazquez’s value.

Forwards

Montero VAN $9.2 – Montero has been in form, in the last four game he has totaled 31 points. This week he gets a shot at Montreal who allowed last place Philadelphia to score three goals.

Larin ORL $9.5 – I’m surprised Larin is still under $10. Larin is the second highest goal scorer so far this season (6 goals). Colorado will be missing Howard, Watts, and Sjoberg. Expect Larin to increase his tally this weekend.

Sapong PHI $7.8 – Union had a great time  during the first 45 mins of their game against Impact. It’s hard to say if Galaxy has a better defense than Impact. Galaxy currently has -4 goal differential in their last four games.

That’s XI value plays for you to consider for Week 9.

Economy Corner Week 8, First DGW!

Remember rosters are due Wednesday!!

Value Play Examples from Week 7 (Week 7 price) –
Goalkeeper: Paying only $5.3 for Bava CHI who scored 8 pts compared to paying $6.0 for Robles NY who scored 9 pts.
Defender: Paying $4.7 for Callens NYC who scored 11 pts compared to paying $6.7 for Zimmerman DAL who scored 4 pts.
Midfielder: Paying $7.0 for Johnson ORL who scored 10 pts compared to paying $10.4 for Valeri POR who scored 5 pts.
Forward: Paying $7.5 for Manotas HOU who scored 8 pts compared to paying $12.0 for Giovinco who scored 4 pts.

Recap of Week 7 Suggestions
Big Win: Suggesting Manotas HOU, who had a better fantasy score than Elis and Torres while being $1 cheaper. Defense did great too as Long NY earned 9pts, Jungwirth SJ earned 6 pts, and Powell POR earned 4 pts.

Swing and a Miss: Goalkeepers – While Bendik ORL earned 4 points, Kann had a rough week with a final score of 1 point.

The Push: Midfield had an average point total last week. Harrison NYC scored a goal, too bad I started Wallace. Medunjanin PHI was Medunjanin, earning a consistent, but average score of 5 points. Alex only earned 4 points.

Biggest Regret: Not trusting Sporting Kansas City against Portland.

*Weekly disclaimer: I’m not saying these choices will perform better than high priced Frei, Hedges, Lodeiro or Giovinco; these are simply value plays so that you can still squeeze Frei, Hedges, Lodeiro or Giovinco all into you starting XI.

Week 8 Value Suggestions, and Remember rosters are due Wednesday.

Goalkeepers: As of now Cropper and Diop are the highest selected Goalkeepers this week, and there’s no reason not to choose at least one. I really like Cropper at home with a DGW, both San Jose and DC are struggling to score. Diop at home against a floundering Seattle is worth the $4 price tag. Here are two others to consider.

Steffen CLB $4.8 – Steffen and Columbus defense is in form. In seven games only Houston and Portland have score more than 1 goal against Columbus, 3 and 2 goals respectively. New York is averaging 1 goal a game. Red Bulls Have played 7 games, there are nine teams that have only played 6 games and have scored more goals than New York.

Gonzalez DAL $4.7 – Gonzalez has now played two games in a row for Dallas. They are at home against Sporting Kansas City.

Defenders After watching Kansas City stop Portland, is there any reason you wouldn’t choose SKC for your defense?

Callens NYC $4.9 – Callens is keeping pace with $6.3 Chanot for fantasy points, 35 pts for the season. They’re at home against an Orlando City team that has only played one away game so far this season.

Crognale CLB $4.9 – If you’re not selecting Steffen for goalkeeper, consider getting Crognale. That said I wouldn’t double down on both.

Burch MIN $5.4 – I’m giving Minnesota’s defense a vote of confidence this week. It has been 4 weeks since Minnesota allowed more than 2 goals to an opposing team, during that stretch they’ve played RSL, Dallas, and Houston. This week they’re home against Colorado, a team that is averaging only 1 goal a game.

Midfielders Godoy is the only San Jose player I’m considering for my team this week. I know they have a DGW, but both games are on the road.

Medunjanin PHI $8.0 – 7,7,5,7,6,5; second highest scoring midfielder under $9. Union is at home against Montreal. Still only selected by >3% of teams

Fagundez NE $7.2 DGW – Nguyen ($10) is probably going to find himself on my fantasy team. Fagundez is a nice cheaper option if you would rather spend the $2.8 saved on someone else.

Vazquez TOR $8.7 – Toronto is at home against Chicago. Vasquez is cheaper than Bradley while scoring just as many points.

Forwards

Ramirez MIN $8.1 – Minnesota is at home against the Rapids. Colorado have allowed 7 goals in their last 3 games to Minnesota, SKC, and RSL.

Mancosu MTL $7.8 – Montreal is against winless Philadelphia.

Agudelo NE $8.4 DGW – Agudelo is the 15 highest scoring Forward, under $8.5, and has a double game week.

That’s XI value plays for you to consider for Week 8. Rosters are due Wednesday.

Please provide constructive feedback in the form of comments, questions, agreements or disagreements on what I’ve said.

Fantasy MLS Economy Corner Week 7

Welcome to the weekly Economy Corner where I suggest the Best Bang for the Buck options at each position (Price Paid/Points Earned). Most of us probably won’t crack the top 100 in the Global Overall league. In fact, I’d be happy to just hit the top 1,000. However, we all have the capability to achieve #1 in our private leagues against our friends, coworkers, and fellow club supporters. I am here to help you achieve that.

Value Play Examples from Week 6 (Week 6 price) –
Goalkeeper: Paying only $3.9 for Diop LA who scored 9 points compared to paying $5.9 for Bingham SJ who scored 3 points.
Defender: Paying $6.2 for Moor TOR who scored 1 point compared to paying $4.3 for Wingert RSL who scored 8 points
Midfielder: Paying $9.1 for Schweinsteiger CHI who scored 4 points compared to paying $6.4 for Mulholland RSL who scored 10 points.
Forward: Paying only $8.7 for Dwyer SKC who scored 10 points compared to paying $11.9 for Giovinco TOR who scored 9 points.

Recap of Week 6 Suggestions
Big Win: Goalkeepers Bono TOR and Ousted VAN suffered through a 2-2 draw and a 3-0 loss. They still both scored 3 points and avoided a price decrease.

Swing and a Miss: All three forwards; Montreal and Minnesota were shutout, and Barnes ORL only played 22 mins. They weren’t the only forwards to have problems this week. Even as their teams won, Urruti DAL, Accam CHI, and Ortiz DC had bad performances and their prices decreased this week.

The Push: Midfield. Once again Medujanin PHI produced points regardless of the scoreline, he earned 6 fantasy points while Union lost at home 3-1 to Portland. Godoy SJ had his first game in which he didn’t score a goal or get credit for an assist, he still earned 5 points. What kept all this goodness from being this weeks Big Win was Tabla MTL. Tabla played a full 90, but his only fantasy accomplishment was earning a yellow card and a price decrease.

Biggest Regret: Believing Sporting KC and Colorado Rapids would be another 0-0 draw.

*Weekly disclaimer: I’m not saying these choices will perform better than high priced Frei, Hedges, Lodeiro or Giovinco; these are simply value plays so that you can still squeeze Frei, Hedges, Lodeiro or Giovinco all into you starting XI.

Week 7 Value Suggestions

Goalkeepers As of writing this Melia SKC and Diop are the highest selected goalkeepers, I expect that to change as more people update their teams for the week.

Kann ATL $4.8 – Kann has yet to score less than 4 fantasy points in a game. Yes this is Atlanta’s third game in a row on the road. However, Atlanta on average has only allowed 1 goal per game; Montreal is only averaging 1 goal per game. Would not be surprised if Atlanta steals 3 points in this one.

Bendik ORL $5.1 – Orlando is at home the second week in a row, they have only allowed 1 goal in their three home games this season.

Defenders Kansas City’s defenders have the 1st, 2nd, and 5th highest Value(Form) (Points/Price), too bad they’re playing Valeri & Co. in Portland.

Long NY $5.2 – The Red Bulls are back home after two road games. They’re going up against a DC United team that has only scored at home, is averaging less than 1 goal a game, and have only played one road game; they lost 0-4 to NYC that game. Even with two losses the last two weeks, Long is still the 6th highest scoring defender.

Jungwirth SJ $5.6 – Earthquakes are at home again this week against FC Dallas. While everyone is aboard the cheaper price hype train Lima, get yourself this differential pick who also has 30 points for the season.

Powell POR $4.9 – There is good reason Portland doesn’t have a defender priced over $5, they have allowed a goal in 5 of their 6 games. Powell is still averaging 4 points a game, and they are playing Sporting KC who only have 2 goals for the season.

Midfielders Godoy is the second highest selected midfielder, I don’t think I need to keep suggesting him.

Medunjanin PHI $8 – 7, 7, 5, 7, 6. I’m just going to keep a running tally of Medunjanin’s weekly point totals until his selection percentage increases. He is the 9th highest scoring Midfielder for the season, but only 2.1% of teams have him selected. Sure he is not a ‘sexy’ choice, but he still gets points even with Philadelphia at the bottom of the table.

Wallace/Harrison NYC $7.8/$7.6 – New York City plays Union this week, and would be a good pick to earn an away win. Both Wallace and Harrison have more points than Pirlo while being over $2 cheaper. Both started forward on opposites sides of Villa last week. Both have >10% selection.

Alex HOU $7.6 – Alex is here because I want to make sure you don’t forget that Houston is hosting Minnesota.

Forwards After last weeks debacle with forwards, hopefully these suggestions prove to be better.

Manotas HOU $7.5 – Minnesota hasn’t allowed more than 2 goals to opposing teams since the acquisition of Burch and Cronin. The last two teams the Loons have played have a combined 12 goals for the season. Houston has 11 goals for the season by themselves. Manotas has scored more points than Elis while Quioto has been out, and he’s $1 cheaper.

Morris SEA $8.8 – The Sounders have a Cascadia Cup match against Vancouver Whitecaps. Morris hasn’t had the most productive season so far scoring only 1 goal. That could change this week as Vancouver has allowed the second most goals to opposing teams for the season (10).

That’s XI value plays for you to consider for Week 6.

Please provide constructive feedback in the form of comments, questions, agreements or disagreements on what I’ve said.

Fantasy MLS Economy Corner Week 6

Welcome to the weekly Economy Corner where I suggest the Best Bang for the Buck options at each position (Price Paid/Points Earned). Most of us probably won’t crack the top 100 in the Global Overall league. In fact, I’d be happy to just hit the top 1,000. However, we all have the capability to achieve #1 in our private leagues against our friends, coworkers, and fellow club supporters. I am here to help you achieve that.

Value Play Examples from Week 5 (Week 5 price) –
Goalkeeper: Paying $6 for Frei SEA who scored 9 pts or pay $4.7 for Steffen CLB who also scored 9 pts and save $1.3
Defender: Paying $5 for Zavaleta TOR (mentioned here last week) who scored 9 pts compared to paying $5.8 for Kemp DC who only scored 3 pts.
Midfielder: Paying $9 for Pirlo NYC who scored 3 pts compared to paying $5.6 for Artur CLB who scored 9 pts.
Forward: Paying $7.6 for Sapong PHI or pay $10 for Wright-Philips, both scored 7 pts.

Recap of Week 5 Suggestions
Big Win: Sapong PHI and Movsisyan RSL both scored a goal in their games. Zavaleta TOR earned clean sheet points.

Swing and a Miss: Midfielders were average; Godoy sat, Harrison and McNamara both scored instead of Wallace, and Portland didn’t score as many against New England as I expected.

The Push: My goalkeepers suggestions last week weren’t the best. However, with only 4 goalkeepers earning clean sheet points, neither Deric HOU or Bendik ORL suffered a price decrease.

Biggest Regret: Assuming Houston’s attack would stutter without Quioto, congrats to everyone who started Torres.

*Weekly disclaimer: I’m not saying these choices will perform better than high priced Frei, Hedges, Lodeiro or Villa; these are simply value plays so that you can still squeeze Frei, Hedges, Lodeiro or Villa all into you starting XI.

Week 6 Value Suggestions
Anyone else notice that MLS adjusted the Fantasy Schedule midday Monday? I had to completely redo the Value Plays for the week, and my fantasy lineup.

Goalkeepers I expect Melia SKC to be everyone’s top choice for goalkeeper this week. I am also becoming a fan of Steffen CLB, but I don’t want to choose him against the Fire and newly aquired Schweinsteiger.

Bono TOR $4.7 – Bono entered the game last week after Irwin left with an injury. Toronto could get a second clean sheet in a row against an Atlanta team that will be missing Martinez.

Ousted VAN $5.3 – Vancouver is on the road and they haven’t had a clean sheet since their Week 1 0-0 draw. That could change this week as the Whitecaps play against a Real Salt Lake team who have only scored 3 goals on the season, 2 of them last week against Leaky D Minnesota.

Defenders Here a few alternatives to Medranda SKC and Watts COL

Callens NYC $4.7 – New York City is on the road against DC United. United has only scored in one of their four games so far. Priced under $5, Callens would be a cheap clean sheet.

Lima SJ $4.6 – Earthquakes are at home against Seattle. Not sure how confident I am they can hold a clean sheet against the Sounders. I am confident Lima can still score points and maybe a goal. He earned 5 points in the 2-1 loss to NYC in their last game. He’s also the highest scoring defender under $5.

Zavaleta TOR $5.1 – I’m doubling down of Zavaleta for another clean sheet. This is Toronto’s second home game in a row. With Martinez out, Atlanta’s high scoring attack was stopped in a 0-0 draw in Seattle. This game against Toronto will be Atlanta’s second road game in a row.

Midfielder Dallas is going to be the hot hand this week against Minnesota. Here are few others to consider.

Godoy SJ $7.3 – I’m also doubling down on Godoy. It’s a home game against Seattle. San Jose has scored in every game so far this season.

Tabla MTL $4.0 – Montreal’s midfield is injury riddled. Tabla played a full 90 against Chicago last week, and scored a goal. He’s the cheapest midfielder who might actually play a full 90. It’s also a good matchup, LA Galaxy have yet to have a clean sheet this season. Sure Ashley Cole is back, but they still gave up 4 goals to the Whitecaps

Medunjanin PHI $8 – Regardless of wins, draws or losses Medunjanin just earns points, in fact Union has yet to record their first win. With zero goals and only one assist for the season, he has still scored 7, 7, 5, and 7 points in the last four games. You couldn’t ask for more guaranteed points.

Forwards Both Torres and Urruti are going to be hot commodities this week, both should get goals and both are under $9. Here are three other forwards to consider that are under $8.

Mancosu MTL $7.9 – In case you forgot in the last 20 seconds, Impact is playing LA and I like the match up. Mancosu has played all but 2 mins for Montreal.

Barnes ORL $7.4 – My third double down for the week. Orlando is back home in their new stadium this week. Barnes has played every possible minute since Kaka was injured, he even has more minutes than Larin. Orlando is playing against a New York team that has allowed 8 goals this season. The only teams not to score against the Red Bull’s were Colorado and Salt Lake.

Ramirez MIN $8.1 – Sorry, I lied. Ramirez costs more than $8, but in case you haven’t noticed, Minnesota has scored in every game they’ve played. The Loons are the 4th highest scoring team, including those who have played against Minnesota. Ramirez has 4 of the teams 10 goals. Don’t be surprised if they score against Dallas.

Thats XI value plays for you to consider for Week 6.

Please provide constructive feedback in the form of comments, questions, agreements or disagreements on what I’ve said.

Fantasy MLS Economy Corner Week 5

We all like to score points in fantasy. What I mean is, that is the point of fantasy. If you’re not scoring points then you’re losing, and no one likes that. Most of us probably won’t crack the top 100 in the Global Overall league. In fact, I’d be happy to just hit the top 1,000. However, we all have the capability to achieve #1 in our private leagues against our friends, coworkers, and fellow club supporters. I am here to help you achieve that by recommending the Best Bang for the Buck Options at each position (Price paid/Points earned).

Week 4 Value Play Examples (Week 4 price) –
Goalkeeper: Paying $6.1 for Robles NY who scored 9 pts compared to paying $4.5 for Van Oekel RSL who scored 8 pts
Defender: Paying $6.0 for Delamea NE who scored 2 pts compared to paying $5.1 for Long NY who scored 12 pts.
Midfielder: Paying $7 for Fagundez NE who scored 14 pts compared to paying $10.3 for Valeri POR who scored 1 pt.
Forward: Paying $8.4 for Agudelo NE who scored 14 pts compared to paying $10 for BWP NY who scored 4 pts.

Recap of Week 4 Value suggestions: Big win was suggesting Nguyen NE going off for 12 points, tied for third most points of the round by any player. It would have been an even bigger win had I remembered so save my team after my final tinker on Friday. I had put in Fagundez NE in my line up as well on Friday only to look at my team Saturday after New England and Minnesota had started to see my initial team from Monday. Big swing and a miss was mentioning Delamea NE who only scored 2 points. Technically I only mentioned Delamea in my 3 Part Confession/Suggestion of Beltran, so if you’re gonna hold Delamea against me, you gotta give me credit for suggesting Real’s defenders; FlashBack:

“you should at least consider a team full of cheap defenders (they’re all priced under $5) playing against a team that has only scored 2 of their 4 goals themselves.”

I’m considering Steffen CLB a push, while he only scored 3 points, he was still the 3rd highest scoring Goalkeeper in the round. My biggest regret last week is not mentioning Warner MIN, who had the fourth highest Midfielder score for the week. Seriously, I even had a short write up done for him: he’s cheap and he’s played all 270 (now 360) possible minutes for the season, so he’ll at least get you 2 points. I decided to swap him out for Trapp CLB, so of course Warner went and got a goal!! So the grand lesson from this round is that maybe you and I should have more confidence in my suggestions.

Here’s my running tally of suggestions: Price Increases – 4, Price Decreases – 2, No Price Change – 26. Practice Makes Perfect so lets look at Week 5!

This is the last week before Double Game Weeks start. I’ve got XI players for you to consider this week. Colorado and Dallas are not playing this week, everyone else is.

*Weekly disclaimer, I’m not saying these choices will perform better than high priced Howard, Bradley, Dempsey or Pulisic; these are simply value plays so that you can still squeeze Howard, Bradley, Dempsey and Pulisic all into you starting XI (#USMNT #RoadtoRussia2018 #USAvsPanamaTonight).

Goalkeepers My favorites for goalkeeper this week are Gleeson POR, Blake PHI and Irwin TOR. The three are hovering around $5.5, $0.7 cheaper than Robles NY. Below are two even cheaper options to consider.

Bendik ORL $5.0 – Sure Columbus has scored in every game so far, but I think Orlando’s defense is better than both Houston and Chicago and they only allowed a goal each.  I would be surprised if Orlando allowed more than one goal.

Deric HOU ($5.0) – Sure Houston has allowed 6 goals so far this season, but they came from top attacking teams Seattle (1 goal), Columbus (1 goal) and Portland (4 goals). Houston is playing against a team that has only scored 2 of their 4 goals themselves (hmm… that sounded familiar).

Defenders  Toronto has some of the highest fantasy scoring defenders going against a Kansas City team that’s been lacking in goals. Problem is both Morrow and Moor cost over $6, so they’re not exactly value options.

Zavaleta TOR $5.0 – While Moor and Morrow are some of the most expensive defenders, Zavaleta is over a $1 cheaper, while only scoring 1 and 2 points less than his high priced teammates.

Long NY $5.3 – What’s not to like about Long? He’s the highest scoring defender while being almost a full $1 cheaper than Morrow TOR, Pirez ATL, and Chanot NYC. Plus he’s playing against a Houston team that might be without forward Quioto who got injured during play against USA on Friday.

Powell POR $5.0 – Last week I berated Powell for a dismal 1 point performance in a 4-2 home win, he responds by crushing it with a 10 point performance in a 3-2 away loss. Portland is against New England this week, I’m hoping for a clean sheet.

Midfielders Raise your hand if you’re gonna start Valeri even after his bad performance against Columbus?

Guzman POR $7.7 – Speaking of Portland, did you see who they’re playing against? It’s New England, they allowed two goals to the Loons even when Minnesota was missing three of their starting midfielders. I’m loading up on Timbers. Caution Guzman is on international duty; if Portland chooses to rest him this weekend, Chara is a good replacement choice and cheaper.

Godoy SJ $7.3 – Godoy is playing for Panama tonight and is against NYC this weekend. I would be surprised if Earthquakes rested Godoy, but New York City has only allowed 2 goals. It’s hard not to play the third highest fantasy scoring player, just keep expectations low this week.

Wallace NYC $7.9 – Same story as Godoy, Wallace plays for Costa Rica tonight, caveat is that San Jose has allowed twice as many goals as New York City. Another consideration is that NYC has been playing a 4-3-3 formation with Wallace up top to the left of Villa, no wonder he has a goal in each of the last two games.

Forwards Did you see how excited and happy Dempsey was to be back with the national team on Friday? There’s no way he’s gonna sit out the home game against Atlanta this weekend. Here’s three cheap choices to pair with him.

Sapong PHI $7.6 – He’s scored against Toronto and Orlando in back to back games, he now gets a chance against DC United. This is a DC United team that gave New York City 4 of their 5 goals for the season.

Movsisyan RSL $7.3 – Real is playing against the loons. I know Salt Lake has only one goal on the season, but they’re playing against Minnesota! Even New England scored 5 goals against Minnesota. Anyone else still not convinced to included Movsisyan in their starting XI?

Barnes ORL $7.5 – I like Orlando this week more than I did Portland last week against Columbus. The only team not to score against Columbus has been DC United. Portland scored twice against Columbus even while missing Guzman and Nagbe. No one from Orlando was called up for international games, so they should all be rested and itching to play.

There you have it, XI value options for Week 4.

Please provide constructive feedback in the form of comments, questions, agreements or disagreements on what I’ve said.

Fantasy MLS Economy Corner Week 4

Best Bang for the Buck at every position for Fantasy MLS Week 4

We all like to score points in fantasy. What I mean is, that is the point of fantasy. If you’re not scoring points then you’re losing, and no one likes that. Most of us probably won’t crack the top 100 in the Global Overall league. In fact, I’d be happy to just hit the top 1,000. However, we all have the capability to achieve #1 in our private leagues against our friends, coworkers, and fellow club supporters. I am here to help you achieve that by recommending the Best Bang for the Buck Options at each position (Price paid/Points earned).

Week 3 Value Play Examples (Week 3 price) –
Goalkeeper: Howard COL ($6) got 2 pts compared to Steffen CLB ($4.5) got 10 pts. I actually suggested Steffen last week *my figurative pat on the back*
Defender: Hedges DAL ($6.6) got 4 pts compared to Crognale CLB ($4.5) got 11 pts
Midfielder: Piatti MTL ($10.2) got 3 compared to Guzman POR ($7.5) got 14 pts.
Forward: Wright-Phillips NY ($10.0) got 6pts compared to Larin ORL ($9.0) got 13 pts.

Recap of Week 3 Value suggestions. Of the 22 players I suggested only one of them had a price decrease – Herbers PHI; while three suggested players had a price increase – Medranda SKC, Godoy SJ & previously mentioned Steffen. That means the other 19 were average for the week, or they didn’t play at all… Practice Makes Perfect so lets look at Week 4!

We have our first International weekend! USA plays Honduras on Friday & Panama on Tuesday! Here is MLS official list of International Call Ups. SoccerCaptains provided a more up to date list on r/FantasyMLS. Check out both SoccerCaptains website and twitter for Fantasy MLS info and advice.

With only six MLS teams are playing this week: New England vs Minnesota, NYRB vs RSL, and CCrew vs Timbers; I’m only giving you 6 Value players, and obviously only from these six teams (Week 4 Price).

*Weekly disclaimer, I’m not saying these choices will perform better than high priced Howard, Zimmerman, Lodeiro or Villa; these are simply value plays so that you can still squeeze Howard, Zimmerman, Lodeiro & Villa all into you starting XI (see what I did there?)

GOALKEEPERS
Top pick for Goalkeeper this week will probably be Robles ($6.1), the goalkeeper with most clean sheets from last season against the weak attack RSL, it makes since. Below is the goalkeeper I would consider for a differential choice.

Steffen CLB ($4.7) –  Steffen is the 5th highest scoring goalkeeper on the season, that is above both Gleeson POR and Robles NY. Rimando is 4th, but he’s playing with team USA this week. I know Crew is playing against Portland, but Colombus is at Home. The Timbers will be missing Guzman and Nagbe from midfield, and are we sure Timbers away problems are solved? Portland only managed 1 goal against a 10 man LA team, thanks to Van Damme’s red card, that was also missing dos Santos, Jones, Zardes, Cole and Rodgers.

DEFENDERS
I like NYRBs defense for this week too, but I like to diversify my choices, so consider these 2 non NYRB options for your team.

Crognale CLB ($4.7) – Crognale got play time this last week due to Mensah’s red card suspension, earning 11 total points which included 4 defending bonus points. Mensah will be back from suspension, but Crew’s other defender Raitala will be gone playing for Finland. I’m hoping Crew starts Crognale again.

Beltran RSL ($4.8) – Confession Time, it’s a three part confession:
(Part 1) I’m not sure I trust RSL’s defense enough to follow this suggestion myself, but you should at least consider a team full of cheap defenders (they’re all priced under $5) playing against a team that has only scored 2 of their 4 goals themselves. Two of New York’s four goals so far this season were own goals thanks to Miller COL and Walkes ATL. Plus Red Bulls midfielder Kljestan is on international duty.
(Part 2) I really would prefer to put Vytas in this spot instead of Beltran, but he’s been out the last two weeks with no guarantee he’s back this week. Including what I said about Portland up above in the segment about Steffen, Portland defenders Powell and Miller only managed 1 point each in a 4-2 Home victory against Houston, that doesn’t give me confidence to consider the current active Timbers defenders anymore than RSL this week. Maybe I’ll start Vytas regardless knowing that if he doesn’t play he’ll be automatically subbed out…
(3) I wrote all of the above before I learned Molino has international duty as well as Schuller & Venegas, Thank you SoccerCaptains, and I didn’t want to delete it. Perhaps Delamea NE ($6) wouldn’t be to bad of a choice with Minnesota missing three of their starting midfielders.

Midfielders
I’ve had Valeri in my starting XI every week so far, of course he’s gonna be in my starting XI again. Here are two cheaper options to place around Valeri.

Nguyen NE ($9.6) – With his price, I’m not sure I would call Nguyen a value play, but there are limited options to choose from and I know we all want a piece of New England’s attack against leaky bucket Minnesota. Nguyen is labeled as a midfielder, but he’s been playing up top next to K. Kamara. And he is cheaper than Valeri by $0.7

Trapp CLB ($7.0) – Trapp has scored as many points as Higuain this season while being $2.6 cheaper. He’s scored 4, 5, and 6 points in the first three games. Sure last week was against DC United, but that’s 6 points that doesn’t include an assist or a goal, and did you read what I’ve already said about Portland?

Forwards
My final value option for this week.

Ramirez MIN ($7.9) – Minnesota has scored at least once in every game so far, 4 goals to be exact, that is more than 11 other clubs. Ramirez scored two of those four goals. He’s also the cheapest forward playing this week. Technically Movsisyan RSL is cheaper, but I don’t think you have any plans to start Movsisyan before you start Ramirez. The problem is that as mentioned before, there’s no Schuller, Venegas or Molino to feed Ramirez.

There you have it, 6 value options for Week 4.

Please provide constructive feedback in the form of comments, questions, agreements or disagreements on what I’ve said.

Fantasy MLS Economy Corner Week 3

Best Bang for the Buck at every position for Fantasy MLS Week 3

We all like to score points in fantasy. What I mean is, that is the point of fantasy. If you’re not scoring points then you’re losing, and no one likes that. Most of us probably won’t crack the top 100 in the Global Overall league. In fact, I’d be happy to just hit the top 1,000. However, we all have the capability to achieve #1 in our private leagues against our friends, coworkers, and fellow club supporters. I am here to help you achieve that by recommending the best bang for the buck options at each position. I’m giving you 4 goalkeepers, 6 defenders, 6 midfielders, and 4 forwards, plus 2 extra (Special Features). That’s enough for two starting XI!!

*disclaimer, I’m not saying these choices will perform better than high priced Howard, Zimmerman, Valeri or Villa; these are simply value plays so that you can still squeeze Howard, Zimmerman, Valeri & Villa all into you starting XI (if you want to)

Week 2 value examples.
Goalkeepers: Robles NY ($6) earned 8 pts vs Gonzalez DAL ($4.5) earned 9 pts.
Defenders: Besler SKC ($6) earned 10 pts vs Callens NYC ($4.5) earned 11 pts.
Midfielders: Lodeiro SEA ($11) earned 8 pts vs Godoy SJ ($7.5) or Alex HOU ($7.5) both earned 11 pts.
Forwards: Wright-Philips NY ($10) earned 4 pts vs Villa NYC ($10) earned 16 pts.

GOALKEEPERS
Everyone is going to be jumping on the Rapids bandwagon this week as they host Minnesota. While I can’t argue against the choice, there are a few differential options at keeper that cost less than Howard ($6.0).

Gonzalez DAL ($4.6) – Dallas finished a 0-0 draw vs SKC, in which Gonzalez earned 9pts. Dallas is about to host New England, which is one of four teams that hasn’t scored a goal yet this season, granted the Revs have only played one game. Careful tho, cuz Seitz was goalkeeper in Dallas’ first game. They may be switching back and forth.

Diop LA ($4.0) – As with Dallas, you need to be careful with picking LA goalkeepers as LA started a different goalkeeper in each game. Diop only allowed 1 goal to attack minded Portland last week, even while LA was missing Jermaine Jones. This week LA is visiting RSL; another team who hasn’t scored yet this season, unlike New England, RSL has played two games.

Melia SKC ($5.6) – Melia has the best value on the season for any goalkeeper with back to back clean sheets against DC and Dallas. SKC is home again hosting SJ. SJ went down 0-2 early against Vancouver last week and didn’t score until after goalkeeper Ousted was sent off with a red card.

Steffen CLB ($4.5) – Steffen is worth a consideration. He played in both of Columbus’s first two games. He’s gonna be overlooked by most players after Columbus lost 3-1 to Houston. Steffen could have a good bounce back game against DC, another team without a goal to start this season. Warning: Crew will probably be missing CB Mensah due to red card (see Special Features below).

DEFENDERS
Same story, different position, Colorado Bandwagon may have never been so full. Even in a 1-0 loss to the Red Bulls, Watts price still increased. Besides Sjoberg, it is actually Dallas’s and New York City’s defenders that cost the most; so Watts, Burch, and Miller are really the value play.

Lima SJ ($4.6) – Lima has been a point scoring machine, fourth highest scoring defender, his price tag is hard to resist. Even with Vancouver’s 2 goals last week, Lima earned 10 pts, scoring a goal definitely helped. I expect him to keep getting fantasy points against SKC this week, SKC has yet to score a goal this season.

Opara SKC ($5.2) – I know I just recommended Lima, SKC’s opponent, but a 0-0 is conceivable. Earthquakes have been at home last two weeks, this is their first road game. I expect SKC to keep a third consecutive clean sheet.

Callens NYC ($4.7) – New York City is feeling good after stomping DC 4-0. They are staying home again. I don’t see NYC allowing two goals to Montreal like the Sounders did this last week.

Onyewu PHI ($4.5) – Onyewu scored 3 bonus points in the 2-2 draw with Toronto, that’s as much as Rosenberry and $0.5 cheaper. Expect him to keep producing against Orlando this week, Orlando’s first full game without Kaka.

Guillen DAL ($4.1) – Guillen is another risk choice as he didn’t play in Dallas’s first game, but he did put in a full 90 mins last week against SKC earning 8 pts.

Long NY ($5.1) – Long is having a fantastic fantasy start to the season with the Red Bulls. Even tho they didn’t get the clean sheet in the opener versus Atlanta, Long still finished that game with 7 pts. That’s the sort of defender you want against attack heavy teams like Seattle. I expect Seattle to score at least one goal, but Long has shown he can still produce points while being scored on.

MIDFIELDERS
Midfield is full of good value plays right now. You shouldn’t ignore players like Valeri or Atlanta’s Almiron and Asad. Use these cheaper players to fill in the space between your stars.

Godoy SJ ($7.2) – You don’t have to jump on the bandwagon yet, you could wait till week 5 since San Jose doesn’t play in week 4, but why wait? He’s scored a goal in each game so far. Even if you remove the goal from his point total, he would have still earned 6 pts against Vancouver. That I like.

Alex HOU ($7.7) – Another player whose price you should take advantage of before it shoots up. Houston has scored 5 goals to start the season, the most by any time that has not played Minnesota. Alex has a lot to do with that recording 3 assists. If Minnesota can score against Portland, why not Houston?

Olum POR ($6.5) – Speaking of Portland, Olum has been doing work, earning as many points as high priced Blanco ($9.1). I’m expecting a good game for both Houston and Portland midfield/forwards this week and Olum should be in the midst of that racking up the bonus points.

D Jones PHI ($4.5) – If you’re looking for a solid player for your bench, look no further. Similar to Onyewu, Jones keeps scoring points that makes him worth choosing over other low priced players for you bench. Each game so far he’s scored 5 points. If Union can get a win, look for Jones’s value to increase.

Gressel ATL ($4.5) – Same mode as D Jones, but he needs to step it up before I consider choosing him over Jones for my bench. He scored 7 pts against Minnesota, but that’s not saying much.

Medunjanin PHI ($8.0) – Another Union player, I’m excited for how many points Medunjanin will get when Union start winning. He scored 7 points in both of Philadelphia’s two games: 0-0 and 2-2 draws.

FORWARDS
Fact: Forwards are expensive. Even the best valued forwards are going to be your most expensive players. So far the most expensive player I’ve highlighted is Medunjanin at $8.0. Here in Forwards Land, we’re gonna start our value picks at $8.6.

Quioto HOU ($8.6) – I’m really disappointed with my Week 2 lineup. I started the week putting Quioto in, but then after reading other people’s analysis and opinions I pulled him out. I’m just happy I kept Alex in midfield in my starting XI. Quioto’s price, point total, & value is the same as Wondolowski’s. The difference is that 3 of San Jose’s 4 goals for the season came against a man down Vancouver team.

Herbers PHI ($7.1) – So there is value at the Forward position for under $8. Herbers just tallied 9 points, while only playing 77 minutes against Toronto.

Badji COL ($6.4) – This the real differential pick this week. While everyone else loads up with Colorado’s defense, get yourself Badji. They’re at home at elevation, against Minnesota who has given up 11 goals to start the season. That’s almost as many goals as the next three porous teams combined – Seattle, Columbus and DC United; they each have allowed 4 goals.

Villa NYC ($10.2) – Yes he’s the second highest priced Forward, but he has 4 more points on the season than next highest scoring forward that has not yet played Minnesota.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Smith Defender LA ($3.9) – if you want to keep money off you bench regardless of how bad a player is, then check out Smith. He is currently the lowest priced player available.

Mensah Defender CLB ($5.6) – Mensah got a red card last game and his price dropped $0.4. Crew is petitioning the suspension, if MLS approves the petition, Mensah would be a cheap center back against a DC United team still looking for their first goal.
